Does diamond jewellery on sale lose its worth?

Diamonds are incredibly rare, which means that they do have a resale value. However, like most everything, you shouldn’t expect to resell a new ring or new pair of earrings for the same price you paid for them in a shop. 

But since diamonds are so scarce and valuable, purchasing pieces from our Diamond Sale range here may actually reduce the difference between what you paid and what you might be able to resell for one day. 

This is simply because any jewellery valuers you go to in future won’t know that the piece was on sale. They’ll simply judge it on its merit. So, as long as you purchase authentic diamond jewellery from reputable diamond retailers, buying diamond jewellery on sale should have no impact on its worth.

What will impact its worth the most is any degradation, so if you are planning to put your diamonds up for sale one day, ensure you take good care of them. 

How are diamonds valued?

Diamonds are valued by appraisers and valuers using the ubiquitous 4Cs: carat, colour, cut, clarity. Carat refers to the weight, Clarity the flawlessness, Cut the depth and girdle etc. that determines how much light passes through, and Colour how colourless it is (again, this impacts the light). 

The value of diamond jewellery also factors in the quality and material of the band, as well as the overall design, brand, and condition. 

For example, complex diamond ring settings may have a higher value because they are difficult to create. Popular designs or brands may also have a higher value because they are in style. And any wear and tear will likely reduce the value.

Should you have your old diamond jewellery valued annually?

It’s really up to you. The fact is, jewellery valuations are something that many of us don’t bother with. We get a beautiful piece of jewellery and are too busy flaunting it to worry about its current worth. Or we’re given a special piece for an engagement, birthday, anniversary etc., and it seems inappropriate to dwell on value. 

However, jewellery valuations are often required for insurance purposes, as well as reselling, divorce settlements, deceased estates etc.. As such, you may wish to have a fairly good idea of what your jewellery assets are worth, and therefore might be inclined to get your jewellery valued more frequently.
