Silver Earrings FAQs

What is ‘sterling’ silver, and are sterling silver earrings safe?

Sterling silver is an alloyed form of silver which is much more suitable to use in jewellery and other metalwork. In this form the metal is beautiful and suffers from minimal tarnish, but it's generally too soft and malleable for many uses, including making most jewellery.

Noble metals such as gold and silver rarely cause sensitivity reactions. Most people can wear silver jewellery everyday. The most common reaction is to nickel, so if you do find your ears getting irritated, itchy or red, try to find earrings marked nickel-free.

How to clean sterling silver earrings

Sterling silver is a wonderfully durable, resistant metal. However, a few things can speed up the tarnishing process. These include moisture, household cleaners, and leaving your silver out in the open for an extended period of time. This means that it’s best to take off your silver earrings and jewellery when showering, cleaning, swimming etc..

To counteract the effects of tarnishing on silver, follow these steps:

  1. Cover the inside of a bowl with aluminium foil, shiny side up.
  2. Bring water to the boil and pour it into another vessel.
  3. Add one tablespoon of baking soda for every cup of water.
  4. Add the mixture to the bowl and submerse your silver jewellery.
  5. Leave your pieces in for up to 10 minutes, depending on the level of tarnishing.
  6. Remove your jewellery with a pair of tongs and polish with a soft cloth.
