January to March - What does your birthstone say about you?

Most people know that each month of the year is represented by a birthstone, but do you know what each one represents? In the first of a four-part series, we’ll reveal what each birthstone says about the person born in that month – and how you can wear or use it in a jewellery gift.

January – Garnet

Garnets get their name from the Latin “garanatus,” which means “seedlike,” referencing its resemblance to pomegranate seeds.

Since medieval times, garnets have been associated with the protection of well-being and friendship. Garnets were exchanged by parting friends as an enduring friendship symbol, warding off depression and bad dreams.

Garnet wearers tend to be compassionate, caring people concerned with the well-being of others. These people are often the elder figure or guardian of a group, always looking out for and protecting others.

If you know someone born in January, follow tradition and exchange a garnet pendant with them.

February– Amethyst

The amethyst is named from the Greek word “amethustos”, which means “sober”.

Associated with self-control and sobriety, it was popular amongst early religious saints, and many religious believers wore it as a symbol of modesty and spirituality. Greeks and Romans wore amethyst amulets to ward off evil and to aid clear decision-making.

People represented by this birthstone are often impartial and deeply spiritual. They’re unlikely to be swayed easily and have a level head on their shoulders.

With its hues ranging from a deep purple to a delicate lilac, you’re sure to find one suitable for a gift for someone born in February.

March – Aquamarine

Aquamarine gets its name from the Latin “aqua marina”, or “seawater’.

Just like the ocean’s waves sweep out the old and sweep in the new, this stone is associated with clean and fresh beginnings. In the past, it was a popular gift for newlyweds.

If you’re represented by this stone, you’ll embody its qualities of honesty and transparency. Others can rely on you to cut to the chase without mincing the truth, providing impartial advice.

With aquamarine ranging from delicate sparkling blue to one of a deeper hue, you can choose a stone as subtle or as eye-catching as the person wearing it.
