April to June - What does your birthstone say about you?
Every month of the year is represented by its own birthstone, and each stone represents something unique about the person. In our second of a four-part series, we’re looking at the birthstones from April through June.
April – Diamond
Diamonds are classic and are easily recognised stones. Don’t let their delicate beauty fool you though, as they’re also one of the strongest materials you are likely to find. In fact, diamonds get their name from the Greek term ‘adamas’, which can be roughly translated as ‘unconquerable’ or ‘indestructible’. It’s hardly a surprise considering the time it takes for them to form, in conjunction with their rarity.
When looking for a diamond, you’re likely to be presented with dozens of choices with a difference in cut, colour, clarity and carat weight. If you aren’t sure which to opt for, speak to a professional jeweller for more advice.
May – Emerald
While the word ‘emerald’ can be translated from the Persian term for ‘green gem’, it’s so much more than a simple green stone. It’s considered one of the four most rare stones and is highly susceptible to chipping and cracking, which means that finding the stone in quality jewellery can be a challenge.
Once the most favoured stone of ancient Egyptian Queen Cleopatra, it was once said that placing an emerald under your tongue could help you see into the future.You don’t have to be a fortune teller to know that choosing an emerald as a birthstone gift is sure to be loved by its receiver!
June – Pearl
The month of June is represented by the pearl, which unlike most other stones, hails from water and not from underground. Pearls are associated with elegance and class, and they add refinement even to the simplest of outfits. Finding a pearl in the wild is rare and these days, most stem from freshwater farms created especially for this purpose.
Pearls represent purity and calmness. Some even believe that wearing them strengthens karma. Whether or not you believe in karma, purchasing pearls for a friend or family member is guaranteed to earn you brownie points.
