How to measure your partner's ring finger - in secret!

Engagement Ring on Hand

Put your Sherlock Holmes hat on, and activate stealth mode. This job is going to take a bit of sneaking, but we promise you this: every bit of struggle is going to be worth it. And we're not one to break a promise.

If you're ready to tie the knot with the only person you want to spend the rest of your life with, and you want to make the proposal as special as they are, the next step is figuring out the measurements of your partner's ring finger.

Pinch One Of Their Existing Rings

Sure, it'll take a bit of planning, but if she or he currently has a favourite ring which they already wear on their ring finger, we highly recommend pinching it. For a good cause, obviously.

Make sure to choose a ring that fits their finger well, and ideally not one that they wear every day. You don't want to have to try to talk yourself out of that situation.

Put One Of Their Rings In Soap, Or Use Your Own Finger

If you don't have the sleuth skills to pull off a steal operation, you can also press one of their favourite rings into a soft bar of soap or piece of wax, and bring that to your local Bevilles.

We promise we've seen weirder.

If you don't have any spare soap bars lying around, quickly trying on your partner's ring and drawing a line directly below where the ring sits will give our jewellers a good idea of their ring finger size.

Ask Their Family Or Friends

If you've discussed marriage and the whole nine yards with your partner, chances are the conversation may have come up with their close friends or family.

Choose the ones that can exercise a bit of subtlety, and ask if they know your partner's ring size. Her or his inner circle can be a trove of ring-related information.

Take Them Shopping
Shopping for Engagement Ring

Drop into a local jewellery shop under the guise of shopping for a friend or family member, and get them to try on a few rings in the process.

If you think your partner will see through this, get an engaged friend to take your partner ring shopping instead.

While They're Sleeping

We can't emphasise this enough—this plan will only work if they are a deep sleeper. Unless you happen to have the dexterity of a brain surgeon.

The best way to do this is to get a piece of string, and wrap it firmly around their ring finger. Mark the string with tape or a marker, and bring the length to your Bevilles jeweller.

If You're Really Unsure, Go For A Larger Ring Size

Ring Size

It's a lot easier to resize a larger ring than expand one that's too small. Take it from the experts. You should also be aware that some rings can't be resized without compromising the Diamond settings, so make sure you check if a ring can be resized if you're not sure of her size.

Or, Just Ask

A diamond engagement ring is one of the only things your partner will see and touch every day for the rest of their life.

If in doubt, and if all else fails, there's nothing wrong with asking your partner for their ring size and preferred design. In fact, it's pretty foolproof.

If you have any questions around ring sizing or diamond engagement rings, please get in touch with your local Bevilles. They'd love to help.
