The Ultimate Step-by-Step Guide to Buying an Engagement Ring - Part 2
In Part 1 of our Guide, we took you through the process of preparing to buy an engagement ring. That includes the initial steps involved in setting a budget for what you can spend, sneaking a look at your partner’s jewellery collection to get an idea of their size and taste, and then finding the perfect jeweller to customise the ring to your specifications.
In this blog, we will take you through the last few steps, including making your final decision, insuring your purchase and how to maintain the ring for years to come.
- Go shopping! Before entering a jewellery store, you should know the terms you’re going to hear, such as those regarding the shape of the ring, the choice diamond characteristics and more. For example, a diamond has a table, crown, girdle, pavilion and culet – each of which determines the physical structure. You’ll also need to ask about the Diamond 4C’s of carat, cut, colour and clarity, which impact both the quality and price. A ring’s GIA grading report will give you a full rundown of what you’re getting Once you’ve narrowed down the above, you can choose between a Round, Princess, Oval, Cushion, Pear, Emerald, Asscher, Marquise, Radiant or Heart-shaped diamond.
- Get insured. Whether you’re planning on popping the question soon or in the near future, you don’t want to take any risks with this precious investment. As soon as possible, get the ring insured. This will start with an appraisal to determine its current market value, and it will rely on information provided by your jeweller. Something else worth considering is travel insurance – if you plan on having the ring along on a holiday break or honeymoon, you’ll want to know it’s insured abroad. Your next step? The proposal!
- Taking care of the ring. Once the dust has settled on your proposal, your partner will probably be showing the ring off to everyone in your circle of family and friends. Make sure that it’s professionally cleaned every 12 months or so, ensuring that it isn’t worn when applying lotions and when sleeping, and that it’s safely put away when gardening, swimming or any other strenuous activity. This will keep it looking brand new for years to come – just like your relationship.
